FOREWORD
by Catherine Kelsey and
Stephen Grady
This has been a fantastic opportunity for the children in
Rooms 10 and 11 at Stanley Bay School. Through working with
Nic Russell and Kenzie's
Gift, the students have gained insight into the lives
of children who are in hospital and found a real purpose
for their storytelling and poetry.
These stories are also an insight for us as adults. Asking the children to write
for other children, instead of adults, gave them a freedom to write their stories.
What makes children laugh is not always what we adults think. Relinquishing the
usual teacher control, we have been surprised and humbled by the creativity of
our students' stories and their engagement with storytelling to their chosen
audience.
We could not have done this project without our experts. A huge thank you goes
to all the parents who have helped. We would like to thank Pippa
Turley for leading the group who were marketing the book, Jan
McEwan for heading up the Book Launch group, Tanya Cole for
guiding the financial team and Chris Newey for website promotion.
These
experts gave the
students
the
opportunity to learn about and experience their own marketing, launch, finances,
editing,
illustrating
and desktop publishing.
Thank you also to Nic Russell for all her inspiration. We send this book off
now full of the stories, poems and dreams of 62 children - a
gift to other children.

The rooster who couldn't
crow
Alex was a rooster who couldn't crow at all!
Never could
And probably never would.
Alex was a rooster
With a job which he had
since he was a very young lad.
He was supposed to tell the humans it was time to wake up
But all he did was a tiny hiccup.
His brother and his father crowed oh so well
It wasn't something on which they needed to dwell.
Then the day came when all the roosters got the flu,
Alex knew it was something he just had to do.
He had to forget all the worries on his mind,
So he strode outside with his family behind.
Tiny drops of sweat dripped down his beak,
He knew this was the time to perform at his peak.
He struggled inside to find the sound that would make
him proud ...
Suddenly a wonderful crowing came pouring aloud!
He woke all the humans from far and wide,
By saying 'get off your big, lazy backside!'
Every dawn from then on, he stood proudly on the wall
Never forgetting the feeling he'd had when he mastered
his call.
